Your brain screams in fear while defense mechanisms guard you from imaginary shadows, and the world tells you that this body part is too big and that part is too small.
You are not the shell of protection you wear to survive 🥜 you are the perfectly perfect peanut within. And we see you, you little cutie.
Memory and Story
Memoir Writing Workshop
Write freely, shape deliberately
This workshop lives in the space between private journaling and shaped narrative and is designed for writers who want to explore their inner world and strengthen their storytelling muscles.
Setting:
We start with a particular point from the past and begin in reflection, then move outward. Through attention to setting, we move from the analytical mind and into sensory detail, letting the page become grounding and immersive until memory becomes something a reader can step into.
Translation: We think about a moment in time, a situation, what we wore, what we did, where we were. All the colors and shapes and feelings of it. We get out of our heads and sink into description.
Structure:
By shifting our perspective from journaling to storytelling, we explore how to find conflict, tension, and movement within our lived experiences, often bringing clarity, relief, and discoveries as natural arcs already present in our stories.
Translation: We look at ourselves in the hero’s journey, a setting followed by a conflict or a change. What happened in your memory, big or small? Take another look. Is there something you see differently from this vantage, a lesson or perspective shift? Or, as a writer, can you come up with a dramatic turn? A rewrite?
Style:
We look at reflection, distance, and resolution, consider intention, and listen for what the writing wants to be. A private release. A shared moment. A piece of a larger memoir. Are you closing a loop, sitting with ambiguity, turning personal insight into intentional prose? Why are we writing? What do we want to get out of this? Is the answer important?
Translation: Does this end in a big wrap-up or resolution? Is it a different ending than you thought it was? Are you adding a car explosion? Does it trail off in akward silence? This is where your reasons for coming to the group might occur to you. Are you journaling because you never journal and this is a good reason to journal? Are you reflecting on the past because this is how you do therapy? Are you writing a memoir? Are you making it up as you go? That’s what I’m doing.
This workshop offers a calm, supportive space to write—bridging personal reflection and storytelling craft. We use writing to slow down, connect, and gently shape experience into language.
Each block - setting, structure, and style - is a five-minute writing exercise followed by discussion. It is not meant to be a writing critique group; it is about writing and the experience of writing.
It runs approximately one hour.
No pressure to share, just time and a steady invitation to breathe and create.
Every Monday at 6:30 PM EST
